A Stunning Sterling Silver Cased Christening Set by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths - Hallmarked 1896
An absolutely exquisite sterling silver Christening set of fork, spoon and napkin ring in a fitted tooled leather box.
This gorgeous set was made by William Gibson and John Langman, trading as Goldsmiths and Silversmiths.
It has the most beautiful decoration - the back of the spoon features a bird surrounded by foliage, with the handle also fully engraved; the fork is engraved with foliage on handle and up to the tines; the napkin ring has 4 birds, two either side of the cartouche and two to the back, also within foliage. The carotouches on all items are blank.
The quality of this set is just amazing. The fork and spoon are both 15.5cm long and the ring measures 2.5cm wide x 4.4cm dia. Each item is hallmarked for London 1896. The fork and spoon carry the makers mark WG JL for Gibson and Langman and the spoon is unusual in that it has been overstruck with what looks like FCW (Frederick Carel Wm Wagner??) so the set was presumably sold on at some time to another jeweller.
The box is lined with satin in the lid which bears the company crest and also reads MANUFACTURING GOLDSMITHS AND SILVERSMITHS 112 REGENT STREET LONDON, the base is lined with velvet. Externally the box is of black leather with gold edging and has some areas of wear, in particular to one edge that has suffered a knock (shown in photos).
